Just Another Day

semi-overcast 19 °C

Nothing exceptional happened today. I visited the Old State House in Downtown Boston. The Old State House was the former seat of colonial government in the former Colony of Massachusetts, having previously accommodated the colonial House of Representatives and the Governor's offices. It was from the Old State House's balcony that the proclamation announcing the accession of George III was read and sixteen years later that the Declaration of Independence was first read to the people of Boston. In the period between those two dates was the 'Boston Massacre', when five American colonists were shot by British soliders as they attempted to storm the Old State House, an event that was used by the leaders of the revolution to build support for their movement. Interestingly Queen Elizabeth II greeted crowds from the same balcony during her first State Visit to the US in 1957.

Having now met many people who are also travelling around America, those in groups of various sizes and also those travelling alone, I have started to appreciate the distinct advantages of travelling solo. From the people I have spoken to who are travelling in groups I have heard about the frustration they feel when they are constantly compromising about what they do, I can do whatever I want whenever I want. They also tell me that they found not long into their journeys that cracks soon became noticable between them and their friends (no doubt because of the above). Those people who are travelling in groups have also spoken of how they have found that it is much easier to talk to people who are travelling alone. I expect this is a combination of two factors. Firstly, us solo travellers are inclined to be more outgoing and make an effort to meet people, and secondly, single travellers are easier to approach for both other individuals and groups of travellers, than a number of prople travelling together. What I am particuarly enjoying is being able to do what I want during the day and spend as much time as I want doing it, but meeting up with the other travellers in the evening to go out for drinks.

Reports tell us that tomorrow is going to be hot and sunny - I had better go find the suncream.
